Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers at the 2026 SAICE Johannesburg Bridge Building Competition

19 June 2026 marked an exciting celebration of Youth Month as aspiring young engineers from across Gauteng gathered for the 2026 SAICE Johannesburg Branch Schools Bridge Building Competition. Hosted by the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) Johannesburg Branch, the event brought together learners, educators, universities, engineering professionals, and industry partners in a shared commitment to developing South Africa’s future engineering talent.

The competition was presented in collaboration with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) South Africa, GIBB, the University of Pretoria, and several other organisations committed to advancing STEM education and expanding opportunities for young people pursuing careers in the built environment.

Engineering Beyond the Classroom

The competition challenged teams from eight high schools to design and construct model bridges while working within realistic engineering constraints. Although the task focused on bridge construction, learners quickly discovered that successful engineering extends far beyond technical calculations.

Participants were required to think critically, solve problems creatively, manage limited resources, communicate effectively as teams, and make design decisions that balanced functionality, efficiency, and innovation. These are the same multidisciplinary skills required by engineers responsible for designing and delivering the infrastructure that supports modern society.

The event demonstrated how practical, hands-on learning can ignite curiosity and transform classroom knowledge into real-world engineering experience.

Celebrating Youth Month Through STEM

Hosted during South Africa’s Youth Month, the competition served as a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in young people and creating pathways into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Learners had the opportunity to engage with professional engineers, academics, and industry leaders who shared insights into careers in civil engineering, construction, infrastructure development, and the broader built environment. These interactions helped learners appreciate the diverse career opportunities available within the engineering profession while encouraging them to pursue further studies in STEM fields.

Building More Than Bridges

One of the defining features of the competition was its emphasis on collaboration. Working in teams of three, learners experienced first-hand the importance of communication, leadership, planning, and teamwork—skills that are essential for every successful engineering project.

Beyond the competition itself, the event fostered confidence, resilience, and innovation while encouraging participants to think critically about sustainable and context-sensitive infrastructure solutions for South Africa’s future.

The Power of Partnership

The success of the 2026 Bridge Building Competition was made possible through the collective efforts of numerous partners who share a vision of empowering the next generation of engineers.

NSBE South Africa is proud to have collaborated with SAICE Johannesburg Branch, GIBB, the University of Pretoria, and other industry stakeholders in delivering an initiative that connects education with professional practice. Such partnerships are vital in strengthening South Africa’s engineering pipeline and ensuring that talented young people have opportunities to explore meaningful careers within the built environment.

Looking Ahead

Competitions such as these play an important role in nurturing future innovators and problem-solvers who will one day design the bridges, roads, buildings, water systems, and infrastructure that shape our communities.

NSBE South Africa remains committed to supporting initiatives that inspire excellence in STEM education, promote diversity within engineering, and equip young people with the skills needed to solve tomorrow’s challenges.

We congratulate all participating schools, learners, teachers, organisers, judges, volunteers, and partners for making the 2026 SAICE Johannesburg Branch Schools Bridge Building Competition an outstanding success.

We look forward to seeing these future engineers continue to build brighter futures—for themselves and for South Africa.
